Title of Project: Childhood through a different lens
Abstract of Project --My name is Rebecca Riddle. I am studying psychology at Southern Utah
University. For my project, I will be participating in the Court-Appointed Special Advocate
program already established in Iron County. This program is a resource for children and families
that are experiencing a rough time. The families involved are dealing with some sort of court
case and the children may or may not, depending on the point in the process, be in the foster
care system. My role would be to get a sense of the child involved and assist the Guardian
ad Litem in getting a sense of what is in the child’s best interest regarding their future. My
volunteering will take place in Iron County with children who are from Iron County. I am
planning to have my project completed within 18 months from the time I am appointed a child
because that is the amount of time that a case is open with a specific child. This project stood
out to me as something I might be interested in because of the potential influence it has on a
child and their future but also the fun things around the community that I will have the
opportunity to be involved in. The way this program works is having the CASA volunteer
show the child a positive influence in their life by doing things that have a positive impact.
Most of these children don’t know how to be children or experience age-appropriate activities.
I will help them experience that and see how it can impact their futures. We will go to the
library and read books, go on hikes, and attend the various activities and events throughout
the community.

Larger Purpose --This program will provide me with the experience I will need when I work
with children of different backgrounds in my profession. I will also be able to form contacts
and gain knowledge that I can use after graduation.

1-3 Outcome(s) -- If I work hard to make these experiences great, I can have a small impact
on the youth and help them realize their importance and purpose.
on the youth and help them realize their importance and purpose.
Community Significance --I will only be helping one individual in the community but I’m
hoping to make an impact that will continue having positive consequences throughout the
rest of their life. I hope the individual will be able to go on to live a better, more fulfilling life.

Differentiation --I think this will help me stand out by having experience with youth of

Estimated Costs --I want to plan activities that won’t cost more than $5.00 per person. In
the end of this time, I hope to spend less than $250.00.

Estimated Timeline --My project started on October 5, 2017 with training and will end by

I will help them experience that and see how it can impact their futures. We will go to the
library and read books, go on hikes, and attend the various activities and events throughout
the community. One major change is the time that it took for my project. I was able to complete the project
sooner than expected. Rather than 18 months, I was able to complete my project in 9-10
months. Goals and Outcomes For my project, I worked hard to know and understand the youth of our community and
helped them to have a better childhood. If I work hard to make these experiences great, I can have a small impact on the youth and
help them realize their importance and purpose. In my opinion, I believe I achieved my goal by helping the youth in our community know they
were important to someone and that they can have a more positive experience. I worked
hard to have the children leave with a positive attitude and see that they can achieve anything.
We played games and had fun learning new things. Some unexpected things that happened were dealing with the mental abilities of the kids. One
boy I worked with has autism and that created problems amongst the group. I wasn’t able to
have one on one time, it was more of a group setting each week.
Deliverables At the conclusion of my project, I will have photos of the activities we participated in and the
hours I will have spent serving in my community. I was able to have the opportunity to take photos of our outings and keep a log of all the time
we spent together.
October 10, 2017 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm (1.5 hours) Objective Record: I was interviewed for the position of being trained as a Court-Appointed
Special Advocate. I learned more about the program and the duties expected of me. I was
informed of all the meetings and trainings that were required. I filled out paperwork. Subjective Record: I found this program to be very interesting and something that could
shape my future career choice. It is something that can be so important in the lives of these
children of our community. I was surprised to find out just how many families are in need of
such help and how many kids are in foster care. October 11, 2017 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm (3.5 hours) Objective Record: We went over chapter six of our training manual on attachment and
separation. A foster parent in Iron County spoke to us about the processes involved and the
most important things to remember when working with kids in the foster program. Subjective Record: This meeting was full of information. She discussed that way that kids feel
when in the foster program. She gave us the statistics, resources, and goals of foster care.
She also told us of the requirements that foster parents have and the steps to becoming
licensed. October 18, 2017 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm (3.5 hours) Objective Record: Today, we learned about the drugs of abuse and discussed substance use
disorder. Cody Matheson came to talk with us about his career. We listened to a 911 call
dealing with domestic violence. Subjective Record: The video was so hard for me to listen to. Having kids of my own, it truly
opened my eyes to what kids understand and how they react to adult situations. I cried during
the whole 911 call. It was interesting to learn more about careers focused on substance use
disorder. October 23, 2017 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm (2 hours) Objective Record: We went to sit in on a court session. A mother in Iron County was
relinquishing her rights as the mother to many children that she could no longer care for and
had been already placed in a home. Subjective Record: I was able to witness someone giving up on their kids but also providing
them with a better future than that of drugs and instability. It was hard to see the mom crying
as she said she was giving up that right as a parent but it was also interesting to see the look
of relief she felt afterward.
